Endometrial Biopsy

They will prevent infection by first clearning the cervix off with betadine. The biopsy tool is a small plastic catheter, smaller than a q-tip, that will pass through your cervix, into your uterus. This acts like a straw, or suction device, to obtain a random sample of endometiral tissue that will be sent to the lab for testing. This is different testing than what is done during a pap smear, which screens the cervical tissue.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is performed to follow up after an abnormal pap smear.

The cervix is cleaned and prepped with a solution that will help the provider better visualize any abnormalities under the special microscope (colposcope). If the physician decides a biopsy is necessary, they will communicate this to you. The cervical tissue will then be sent to the lab for testing. The physician may apply a solution to help the cervix to stop bleeding. When this solution dries, it may stain your underwear and look like dried coffee grounds.

Pre-Procedure Instructions

Prior to coming to your appointment, take EITHER Acetaminophen Extra Strength 1000 mg OR Ibuprofen 600 mg. At your appointment, the physician will rule out pregnancy, if necessary, with a urine pregnancy test.

If you have severe pain, despite taking Tylenol and Motrin and using heating pad, or if you have bleeding where you saturate a pad in less than an hour for 2 consecutive hours, please call our office.

Please follow any additional instructions given by the physician or the nursing staff. If you have questions, call the office at (989) 631-6730.
