Intrauterine Insemination
- For each cycle you will need to purchase an ovulation predictor kit from any local or online retailer. We will help you plan when to start using the kit. The best time to monitor your urine is the first specimen of the morning around the time of your ovulation.
- You should abstain from intercourse for 2-3 days prior to the expected time of ovulation.
- When the test kit indicates a positive ovulation call our office.
- On the morning of the insemination (approximately 30 minutes before your appointment), your partner should produce a semen specimen into a clean container. Do not use condoms for collection as they contain a spermicide.
- Transfer the fresh semen sample into the test tube and add room temperature Ham’s solution to make a 5-6 cc total volume in the tube. Store the Ham’s solution in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
- Bring the remainder of the Ham’s solution and the specimen to the office at the time of your appointment. Keep the test tube warm by placing it in your bra or armpit.
- Your partner is welcome to be present. It takes very little time for the actual insemination, but it takes 30-60 minutes to process the sample after you arrive.
